Mandrake - Netflix

The series focuses on the character of Mandrake, a criminal lawyer from Rio de Janeiro played by Marcos Palmeira. His line of work consists mainly of helping wealthy individuals who are facing trouble with the shadier elements of the local society (such as rich men who may be being blackmailed by corrupt cops). Mandrake's job is to act as a go-between Rio's subculture and his clients.

He works out of a small, but highly respected, practice, where he has a partner, seventy-year-old Wexler, a Jewish lawyer who was Mandrake's late father's associate in the same practice. In it, Wexler is responsible for the Civil cases, whereas Mandrake (as was his father before him) is responsible for the Criminal ones. Completely honest, Wexler often scolds Mandrake, who he treats like his own son, for his unorthodox and sometimes not completely honest dealings and methods.

Mandrake is also a womanizer, often dating two women at once and having numerous one-night stands. Other than women, his other confessed addictions are Cuban cigars and Portuguese wines.

The episodes are punctuated by narrations in off by Mandrake, where he ponders about the many aspects of human nature and life in modern society. Besides that, he also has informal discussions about life in general with some colleagues at a local bar, named Bar do Zé.

Mandrake - Mandrake the Magician - Netflix

Mandrake the Magician is a syndicated newspaper comic strip, created by Lee Falk (before he created The Phantom). Mandrake began publication on June 11, 1934. Phil Davis soon took over as the strip's illustrator, while Falk continued to script. The strip is distributed by King Features Syndicate. Mandrake, along with the Phantom Magician in Mel Graff's The Adventures of Patsy, are regarded by comics historians as the first superheroes of comics. Comics historian Don Markstein writes, “Some people say Mandrake the Magician, who started in 1934, was comics' first superhero.” Davis worked on the strip until his death in 1964, when Falk recruited current artist Fred Fredericks. With Falk's death in 1999, Fredericks became both writer and artist. The Sunday Mandrake strip ended December 29, 2002. The daily strip ended mid-story on July 6, 2013 when Fred Fredericks retired, and a reprint of D220 “Pursuit of the Cobra” from 1995 began on July 8, 2013.

Mandrake - Parodies and tributes - Netflix

Mandrake the Magician inspired several other comic characters with magic powers, including Zatara, Kardak the Mystic Magician, Monako, Dakor the Magician, Ibis the Invincible, Mantor the Magician, Sargon the Sorcerer, Zatanna, Mr. Mystic, The Wizard, Mysto, Magician Detective, and the short-lived Jim the Magician (Jadugar Jim in Hindi) by Sudhir Tailang in India. In Mad #14 (August 1954), Mandrake was spoofed as “Manduck”. He lives in a city dump, which he convinces visitors is a palatial home by “gesturing hypnotically”. In this story, he matches wits with The Shadow; he, Lothar (called “Loathar”), and The Shadow all gesture hypnotically at each other, and after a huge explosion only Lothar (looking like Manduck) remains. In another issue, Manduck pulls off the trick of turning Loathar into a six-foot-tall blonde woman. “In Pictopia” (first published in Anything Goes! #2, August 1986) is a short story by Alan Moore and illustrator Don Simpson, which takes place in a limbo world of comic book characters. The main character, Nocturno the Necromancer, is based on Mandrake. The story was reprinted in George Khoury's The Extraordinary Works of Alan Moore (TwoMorrows, July 2003). Michael Kupperman's Tales Designed to Thrizzle (Fantagraphics), pokes fun at many comics, including Mandrake the Magician with a three-panel strip, “Mancake the Magician.”

Mandrake - Plot - Netflix

Nambiar (Rajan P Dev), a building contractor, is a die-hard atheist. However he is plagued by many a problem in his contracting business, particularly due to the conspiracies plotted by his competitor, Shankara Pillai (Janardhanan). Compelled by his wife Sudharma, who is devoted to God, and his children Pradeep and Sandeep (Jagadeesh and Kalabhavan Navas respectively) Nambiar consents to consult an astrologer Thanku Panikkar (M. S.Thrippunithura) to find if there is any supernatural cause behind their problems. Thanku Asan ascertains that there is an evil spirit residing in the bust of “Junior Mandrake” (in fact a bust in the shape of the antagonist in the movie) kept in their house. Nambiar had been entrusted to handover this bust to someone in the airport in India when he returned from Singapore, but no one had showed up to receive it. Thanku Panikkar prescribes the evil spirit can be got rid of only by presenting the bust to someone who may receive it “with pleasure”, who in turn will be taken over by the evil spirit. Nambiar manages to present this bust to his adversary Shankara Pillai on his birthday party, and Thanku Panikkar is apparently proved right as the bad luck of Nambiar is now shifted to Shankara Pillai, also turning Nambiar into an ardent believer in God in the process. Shankara Pillai comes to know about this soon and tries to get rid of the bust by any means. The bust make various journeys back and forth, finally ending up with Omana Kuttan (Jagathy Sreekumar), driver of Menon (Paravoor Bharathan) who is the father in law of Nambiar. Omana Kuttan soon chances to discover that there is in fact a treasure of precious stones hidden inside this bust. He takes some stones with him, and keeps the rest over the roof of the rented house he was living in. By the time he came back after selling these stones the house had been rented out by the owner as a police station. Omana Kuttan tries to retrieve his treasure from the roof of building by various means, generating some comedy in the process, but ends up in a mental hospital during this endeavor. At the same time the owner of the treasure, a bald headed underworld don in whose shape the bust was made, who was so far in jail in Singapore, is now out searching for it. He tracks down all those involved in the journey of the bust, starting with Shankara Pillai, Nambiar, his two sons, Menon and Omana Kuttan. In the climax the villain ends up in police custody in his attempt to recover the treasure from the police station by a vicious plan, and the treasure goes to the government. The story ends with a happy note with Pradeep joined with the daughter of Shankara Pillai with whom he was in love.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1974 was the 19th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It was held in the seaside resort of Brighton on the south coast of the United Kingdom. The BBC agreed to stage the event after Luxembourg, having won in both 1972 and 1973, declined on the grounds of expense to host the contest for a second consecutive year. The winner of the Contest was Sweden with the song “Waterloo” which was performed by ABBA, who went on to become one of the most popular recording acts of all time. Sweden's win was their first. Katie Boyle returned to host her fourth Eurovision Song Contest (after hosting the 1960, 1963 and 1968 contests).

Brighton is the major part of the city of Brighton and Hove (formed from the previous towns of Brighton, Hove, Portslade and several other villages) on the south coast of Great Britain. The venue which hosted the 1974 Contest was the Brighton Dome, an arts venue that contains the Concert Hall, the Corn Exchange and the Pavilion Theatre. All three venues are linked to the rest of the Royal Pavilion Estate by an underground tunnel to the Royal Pavilion in Pavilion Gardens and through shared corridors to Brighton Museum, as the entire complex was built for the Prince Regent (later George IV) and completed in 1805.

O Rei do Gado - Luiz Fernando Carvalho - Netflix

Luiz Fernando Carvalho (born July 28, 1960 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian filmmaker and television director, known for works closely linked to literature that constitute a renovation in Brazilian audiovisual aesthetics. He has already brought to the screen works by Ariano Suassuna, Raduan Nassar, Machado de Assis, Eça de Queirós, Roland Barthes, Clarice Lispector, Milton Hatoum, José Lins do Rego and Graciliano Ramos, among others. Some critics compare Luiz Fernando Carvalho's productions to the Brazilian Cinema Novo and icons of film history such as Luchino Visconti and Andrei Tarkovski. His work is characterized by visual and linguistic experimentation and exploration of the multiplicity of Brazil's cultural identity. The baroque style of overlays and interlacing of narrative genres, the relation to the moment in Time, the archetypal symbols of the Earth and the reflection on the language of social and family melodrama are features of the director's poetic language. The filmmaker's works have met with both critical and public acclaim. He directed the film To the Left of the Father (Lavoura Arcaica) (2001), based on the homonymous novel by Raduan Nassar, cited by the critic Jean-Philippe Tessé in the French magazine Cahiers du Cinéma as a "ground-breaking promise of renovation, of an upheaval not seen in Brazilian cinema since Glauber Rocha, which won over 50 national and international awards. The telenovelas Renascer (Rebirth) (1993) and The King of the Cattle (O Rei do Gado) (1996), by screenwriter Benedito Ruy Barbosa and directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho, are recognized as benchmarks of Brazilian television drama and achieved some of the highest audience ratings of the 1990s. There is a marked contrast between the director's television works: from the pop design of the 60s in the series Ladie's Mail (Correio Feminino) (2013) to the classic rigor of the mini-series The Maias (Os Maias) (2001), the urban references of the working-class suburbs in the mini-series Suburbia (2012) to the playfulness of the soap My Little Plot of Land (Meu Pedacinho de Chão) (2014), the aesthetic research of the Sertão (backcountry) in Old River (Velho Chico) (2016) to the Brazilian fairytale of the mini-series Today is Maria's Day (Hoje É Dia de Maria) (2005) and the realistic universe of family tragedy in Two Brothers (Dois Irmãos) (2017). The director's production process is renowned for identifying new talent from all over Brazil and for training actors, revealing new stars of the dramatic arts such as Leticia Sabatella, Eliane Giardini, Bruna Linzmeyer, Johnny Massaro, Irandhir Santos, Simone Spoladore, Caco Ciocler, Marcello Antony, Marco Ricca, Isabel Fillardis, Giselle Itié, Emilio Orciollo Netto, Sheron Menezes, Jackson Antunes, Maria Luisa Mendonça, Eduardo Moscovis, Jackson Costa, Leonardo Vieira, Cacá Carvalho, Luciana Braga, Julia Dalavia, Renato Góes, Cyria Coentro, Marina Nery, Júlio Machado, Bárbara Reis, Lee Taylor, Zezita de Matos, Mariene de Castro and Lucy Alves, among others. The director's actor coaching technique has given rise to a method recounted in the book O processo de criação dos atores de Dois Irmãos (The creation process of the actors in Dois Irmãos), by the photographer Leandro Pagliaro.

Terra Nostra - Netflix

The story is set in the late 19th century and takes place at a time when slaves were freed in Brazil and there was a need for workers, especially on Brazilian coffee fazendas (plantations). This partly resulted in a large number of Italians emigrating to Brazil, looking for employment and a better life.

Unlike many other telenovela stories, the characters are not larger than life in "Terra Nostra." Instead, they are everyday people who make ordinary decisions. Consequently, the viewers can relate to what is happening in the story.

Brothers of Italy (Italian: Fratelli d'Italia, FdI) is a national-conservative political party in Italy led by Giorgia Meloni. The party, created from a split of The People of Freedom (PdL) in December 2012, is the main heir of the Italian post-fascist conservative tradition that had the Italian Social Movement (1946–1995) and National Alliance (1995–2009) as its main political representatives. National Alliance was merged into the PdL in 2009, but its bulk is now with the FdI.
